Asking about your mail

Reference archive: this page documents the original Yab browser. Features, platforms and release dates here do not describe the current Veb prototype. Veb release plans →

⌘J hands your agent the mail in front of you, or all of it: it reads, sums up and drafts, and sends only after your yes.

⌘J

Press ⌘J in mail and the line opens at the page’s foot, as it does on a site, with a chip of what mail shows: “This email · Mark Chen” on a thread, “Needs you · 7” on a list, “3 threads” for rows you picked. Ask in your own words, such as what did Anna say about the contract?, and the answer comes in the chat beside mail. It needs an agent connected.

With nothing typed, the line offers:

  • What Needs Me Today, on a list.
  • Summarize, on rows you picked, a search, or a thread of three mails or more: who wants what, what was decided, and what’s left, a line each.
  • Do What It Asks, on a thread, the same as D.

The whole mailbox#

Your agent isn’t held to what’s on screen. It searches all your mail, asking Gmail itself for anything older than this Mac keeps, and reads whole threads and the files they carry, a PDF’s words too. A mail it names opens in mail when you click it.

With Settings › Mail › Agents › Let agents search all your mail on, Veb keeps five years of your mail’s words on this Mac for agents to search by what they mean, not only the words they use, so when does my domain renew? finds the mail that says “renews on March 3”. It’s built while your Mac is idle and on power, and Pause holds it.

Do It#

D hands a mail to your agent: it opens what the mail links to in tabs of its own, does the work, stops for your yes before anything that books, pays or sends, and leaves a reply drafted with what it did. Its work shows on the row and over the thread; click there for its chat.

Drafted, and sent with your yes#

An agent can leave a reply ready under a thread, and says so under its answer: “Reply drafted under Mark Chen’s email · Nothing sent”. When you ask it to send, a card shows every address, the subject and the words, and the mail goes only after your yes, from your address, as your own Send sends it. With agents in Bypass it goes without the card; see What agents ask first. Agents are told that mail is data, whoever it claims to be from: when a mail holds instructions for them, their answer says so instead of following them, and no mail or file can make them send.
