Pinned and kept tabs

Reference archive: this page documents the original Yab browser. Features, platforms and release dates here do not describe the current Veb prototype. Veb release plans →

The pages you keep open all day, at the top, and the ones you want to keep, above the line.

⇧⌘D⌘D

Veb’s sidebar reads from the top down: pins, kept tabs, a line, then today’s tabs. What sits above the line stays; what sits below it is today’s, and puts itself away when you are done with it.

Pins#

A pin is a square with the site’s icon or a letter, for the pages you keep open all day: mail, calendar, chat. Press ⇧⌘D, choose Pin from the tab’s right-click menu, or drag the tab into the pins.

  • ⌘W on a pin puts it down: the page is let go and the pin stays. Only Unpin removes it.
  • Double-click a pin, or press ⌃⌘R, to give it another letter.
  • Right-click a pin, a kept tab or a folder and choose Change Icon… for an emoji, one of Veb’s icons or a picture of your own. Type to search, and ↩ puts on the first one found. Restore Site Icon, beside the search, brings back the site’s own icon.
  • Pins are never tidied away, and memory running short never puts one to sleep: only you do, or a page that grows huge or gets stuck. See Tidying and sleeping tabs.
  • Pin a calendar and it can show your next meeting.

Kept tabs#

A kept tab is one you mean to come back to. Press ⌘D, as in Arc, right-click a tab and choose Keep Tab, or drag it above the line; ⌘D again lets it go. Kept tabs are never tidied away, and you can put them in folders.

⌘W on a kept tab only puts it to sleep; the row stays. Under the pointer a kept tab shows a minus, which does the same. Once it is asleep, its end becomes a cross that takes it out of your kept tabs, and ⌘Z brings it back. Close and Don’t Keep, in its menu, does it in one go. Memory running short never puts a kept tab to sleep either.

The page it was pinned on#

A pin or a kept tab remembers the page it was pinned or kept on. Browse away and a kept tab’s row shows a slash and the page you’re on; click its icon to go back. A pin’s right-click menu starts with Back to instead. Edit Pinned Page (Edit Kept Page on a kept tab), in its right-click menu, changes that address.

A name you give a kept tab stays after it browses away. Kept tabs without one get short names on their own: Veb leaves out the site’s name and a count, and says a long title in a few words, worked out on this Mac.

Clear today’s tabs#

In the sidebar, point at the line and press Clear. Every one of today’s tabs goes, except the one on screen and any that play sound, are on a call, are downloading or float a video. The notice that follows has Undo.
