Tabs and Windows

The sidebar

Tabs down the side, as in Arc, or in a row across the top. Your choice, one key apart.

⇧⌘S⌘S

Veb keeps the same tabs in one of two places: in a row across the top of the window, or in a sidebar down the side. Press ⇧⌘S to move them from one to the other; nothing else about them changes. Settings › Appearance › Sidebar puts the sidebar on the Left or the Right, or turns it Off, which puts the tabs across the top.

What the sidebar holds#

From the top down:

  • The window’s buttons, then back, forward and reload. On a page with an article, a book for reading mode.
  • Your pinned tabs, as a grid of squares.
  • Your kept tabs and folders, then a line, then a New tab row and today’s tabs.
  • At the foot: downloads, then your spaces as a row of emoji (dots when the sidebar is narrow), Mail among them, and a plus in the corner for New Space, New Folder, New Boost…, Split View and New Tab. While a tab you aren’t looking at plays something, a small player sits under the foot; paused, it has a play button at its end to play it again.

Hide it, and bring it back#

⌘S hides the sidebar and gives the page the whole window. Touch the window’s edge on the sidebar’s side and it comes back over the page as a card; move away and it goes. Full screen works the same way.

Drag its edge to make it wider or narrower, and double-click the edge to put it back. Pull it in past its narrowest and it snaps shut.

Tabs across the top#

On top, your pins lead the row as small squares, then your tabs. Tabs keep their titles while they fit, then shrink to their icons, then the row scrolls. A + shows while the pointer is in the row, and back, forward and reload sit beside the window’s buttons. ⌘S hides the tab bar; point at the window’s top edge and it comes out over the page.

Density#

Settings › Appearance › Density is Comfortable, with Arc’s sizes, or Compact, for more tabs in the same room.

Letters or icons#

Settings › Appearance › Tab icons chooses between Site icons and Letters. With letters, pins show a letter of your choosing and tabs show only their titles.
