Commands on selected text

Reference archive: this page documents the original Yab browser. Features, platforms and release dates here do not describe the current Veb prototype. Veb release plans →

Select text anywhere and improve, translate, explain or ask about it, with a model for each command.

⌘J

Select text on any page, in a box or not, and press ⌘J. The field opens with the commands for it, each saying where it runs: on this Mac, or on your agent.

  • Improve Writing, Fix Spelling and Grammar, Translate and Summarize run on your Mac’s own model when it can, so the text stays on the Mac.
  • Explain Simply runs on your agent.
  • Type your own question and the list offers Ask Claude “…” (or ChatGPT).
  • Ask About This… hands the selection to a task.

Right-click a selection for Improve Writing, Fix Spelling and Grammar, Translate and More Commands….

The answer#

Picked from the list, a command answers in the field. A rewrite, such as Improve Writing, Fix Spelling and Grammar, Translate or one of your own, shows its changes marked; hold ⌥ to see the original. Run from its own key or the right-click menu, a rewrite comes in where the selected words were, in the page’s own type, with a bar under them: Copy ⌘C copies the new words and Replace ↩ puts them in the page. On text the page can’t take, ↩ copies.

Explanations, summaries and the like are written in the field. What ↩ does there depends on where the text was: Replace Selection in a box you can edit, Insert in Reply, or Copy Response. Type to send a follow-up.

Your own commands#

Settings › AI › Commands lists them all. Turn on more of the built-in ones (Make Shorter, Make More Formal, Define, Explain Code, Find Bugs, Add to Calendar, Show on Map and others), give any a key of its own, or press New Command:

  • A prompt, with {selection}, {page}, {url}, {language} and more where they go.
  • A model: your Mac’s own, or any Claude or GPT model, with its effort.
  • Where the result goes: in place, beside the text, below the page, in a reply box, or copied.
  • When it shows: any text, text in boxes, page text or code, on every site or only some.
